Abstract: Up to now, the evolution principle of traffic flow has not yet been well understood and the controversies in traffic flow theory are very heated. The controversies are mainly due to, as realized by the traffic community, a lack of precise traffic data. Motivated by the fact, we have carried out an experimental study in a simple scenario of car-following platoon (comprising of 25 passenger cars) on a 3.2-km-long open road section.
The experiment found that the standard deviation of the car velocities increases linearly when the leading car moves slowly and concavely when the leading car velocity increases. We also found when the velocity difference between the car and its preceding one is always small, the headway could change significantly. We propose two possible reasons for the feature. (i) In certain range of headway, drivers are not so sensitive to the changes in headway when the velocity differences between cars are small. Only when the headway is too large (small), will they accelerate (decelerate) to decrease (increase) the headway. (ii) At a given velocity, drivers do not have a fixed preferred headway. Instead they change their preferred headway either intentionally or unintentionally from time to time in the driving process.

We have simulated the traffic flow in a platoon with the well known optimal velocity model (Bando et al., 1995) and the intelligent driver model (Treiber et al., 2000). The simulation results are significantly different from the experimental ones. In particular, the standard deviation of the car velocities increases convexly, which is qualitatively different from that in the experiment.
We have proposed two different types of car-following models based on the two mechanisms mentioned above, respectively. It is shown that the simulation results are in agreement with the experimental ones.
